We encourage patrons to donate materials to the Library. Donated materials, including books, audio books on CD or cassette, movies on DVD or VHS, Music CDs, puzzles, and historical materials about the area, both adult and children are accepted.
Upon receipt of donated materials, we make a list of the materials by donor. A "thank you" letter, listing the materials donated [unless the patron requests “no note”] follows. The materials are sorted by what we have/do not have in the library.
Materials we have are checked to determine condition. If the donated item is in better condition, we enter it into the circulating collection.
EX: We have the paperback of a novel and the donor gives a good condition hard back - we usually add the hardback and remove the paperback
Materials we do not have are considered for entry into the collection by several criteria:
- Fiction - recent publication within the past five years, part of a series we are missing, library’s copy long overdue or missing [we often don’t know the item is missing until we receive a donated copy]
- Non-Fiction - recent publication, subject area of interest to patrons, library’s copy long overdue or missing
- Audio books - follow the same criteria as above for fiction and non-fiction works
- Movies - follows the same criteria, except we do not accept R-rated movies into the collection
- Music CDs
- Puzzles are not added to the collection, but left or for patrons to put together
- Historical materials, pertinent to the area, are added to the collection, usually in reference
Donated materials that are not entered into the circulating collection are:
- New releases [some patrons purchase and read, then give the books to the Library] are sold by the Library throughout the year. We rarely add more than one copy to the collection.
- Given to Friends of Clifton Forge Public Library for their Book Sales in April and October
- Given to Senior Citizen centers, especially large print
- Given to Douthat State Park, especially paperback books that campers can read while visiting
- Given to the Salvation Army
Materials in poor condition [dirty or have been wet] and outdated textbooks are recycled.
